A training session can introduce a new skill, but players often need more opportunities to explore it before it feels comfortable.
At Wymondham Town United FC, our coaching framework supports learning between sessions by helping families understand what players are working on and how they can practise.
Start with the training focus
The club is investing in The Coaching Manual to support age-appropriate session planning. Its resources and demonstration videos give coaches practical examples to use when preparing activities.
Through the club’s agreed channels, coaches can share relevant session information and videos with families. This helps players see an activity before training and gives parents a clearer understanding of its purpose.
Keep practice connected
Home practice is most useful when it connects with the player’s current learning. Rather than trying lots of unrelated drills, families can ask their coach which activity would help reinforce the latest session.
Technique videos and challenges, including resources such as TopTekkers, can provide ideas for independent practice. The coach can help identify activities that suit the player’s age, confidence and development needs.
Let the player take the lead
Practice should give children an opportunity to enjoy having a ball at their feet. A safe space, an appropriate activity and encouragement can help them explore without feeling that every attempt is being judged.
Parents can support by showing interest, listening and recognising effort. If an activity becomes frustrating or unclear, bring the question back to the coach.
Use feedback to choose the next step
A player does not need to master everything at once. Conversations with the coach can help families understand what is improving and where a little more practice could be useful.
That connection between training, home activities and feedback helps give practice a purpose while keeping the player’s enjoyment central.
Ask your child’s coach about the current training focus and any suitable resources they can share through the club’s agreed channels.
